Makantali by Harold Bascom

Malcolm De Freitas, Gerard Gilkes, Natayha Whaul, Nirmala Narine

Synopsis

This play won the 1996 Guyana Prize for Literature. It tells the moving, multilayered story of Makantali, a legendary porkknocker (a gold-seeker) who is stuck in a hellish spiritual place with Lillian, his nagging wife; Ezme, the bush prostitute he loved to his ruination; and a chorus of other wretched spirits. From this painful purgatory, Makantali has to find a way to communicate through a single dream with a living, modern-day gold-seeker, and guide him, positively, past the very mistakes that he, Makantali, made. Will the spirit of Makantali succeed in order to be taken, at last, to a peaceful place in his death; or will he fail and become a wretched demon roaming the earth?
